WASTE VISION 2100 is a bi-annual award for early carrier researchers in connection to the Sardinia Symposium. Early carrier researchers and scientists developing groundbreaking ideas and innovative solutions for big challenges in waste management are welcome to apply for this grant!
The grant includes free IWWG membership for one year, free entrance to the Sardinia Symposium, support of travel costs to the conference (€ 300 for Europeans, € 700 outside Europe), and the winner of the award is invited to orally present his/her thesis/idea at the Sardinia Symposium.
The winner will be selected by a jury consisting of members of the IWWG-Board. The last award has been provided during the Sardinia 2023 Symposium.

The Award winner of the 3rd edition is Dr. Valentina Grossule.
The project proposal is aimed to optimised and engineer a highly innovative biological process, based on the use of Black Soldier Fly larvae (BSFL), for treatment of high organic content wastewater as alternative to traditional systems, to minimise waste production (in terms of excess sludges and digestate) while recovering high value resources within the concept of Circular Economy.
BSF larvae have been widely used for solid biowaste treatment and resource recovery, offering a proper environment for larvae, while the research on the use for liquid substrates treatment is impaired by the fact that BSF larvae are terrestrial insects, typically drowning in pure liquid environment. The Award winner of the 2nd edition is Mr. Pedro Gonçalves.
The thesis of Mr. Pedro Gonçalves is significant since the applied methods and models provide information that are of great help to better understand the behavior of composite particles and propose efficient process flowsheets to recover valuable materials for recycling purpose with less environmental footprint. This work filled the important research gaps applicable to any kinds of heterogeneous waste recycling, and has been highly acknowledged by other researchers.

The Award winner of the 1st edition is Dr. Vasiliki Savvilotidou.
Dr. Vasiliki Savvilotidou is a principal research engineer at the Laboratory of Toxic and Hazardous Waste Management, Technical University of Crete, Greece.
With her thesis she developed groundbreaking ideas and innovative solutions in the very complex and emerging topic of management of photovoltaic waste. In particular, she investigated approaches for the recovery of bulk and critical raw materials as well as reuse options of glass and plastic in the construction sector. By her thesis she could demonstrate that metal, glass and plastic parts consisting more than 90% of P/V panels can be reused, recovered or recycled towards an integrated sustainable management of waste P/V panels, indicating potential future applications.
