On 24 April 2013, the International Waste Working Group launched its Southern African Regional Branch (IWWG-SARB), with secretariat at the University of kwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa, under the coordination of Prof. Cristina Trois (Dean of Engineering and resource expert for UN-IPLA since 2011).The IWWG-SARB, in collaboration with IWWG, IWMSA (Institute of Waste Management Southern Africa) and the University of kwaZulu-Natal aims to promote best practice in waste management and build capacity of Local Authorities in Africa and developing countries. Starting from South Africa, IWWG-SARB will extend to other Sub-Saharan and Southern African countries..

The Sarchi Chair in Waste and Climate Change at UKZN has partnered with SANEDI and IWWG to an International Training
Seminar and Summer School on the e ective “Management of Waste as a Resource”. This programme will provide advanced
training for Practitioners, Scientists and postgraduate students on the most innovative practices in waste treatment,
characterisation and valorisation.
