Dr in Chemistry from the Free University in Amsterdam(1972). PhD at Free University in 1976. Title: Trace analysis in water samples by neutron activation analysis after pre-concentration on activated carbon. Since 1976 he has held different positions at the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation (ECN, Petten). From 1976 to 1980 he has been active in Neutron Activation Analysis of all kinds of matrices: sediments, soils, rocks, waste materials, atmospheric dust, plastics, glass, vegetables, coal fly ash, catalysts and slag. From 1980 change of focus to environmental issues related to energy production and development and standardization of leaching test for environmental assessment of waste and alternative materials in construction.
Hans van der Sloot is involved in standardization of Leaching tests for waste through CEN TC 292 “ Characterisation of Waste”, mining waste through his activities in CEN TC 292 WG8 dealing with wastes from the extractive industry, soil, sludge and sediments through his activities in ISO TC 190 “Soil” and construction products through CEN Committee 315 “Construction products: Assessment oÍ release oÍ dangerous substances” with a mandate to adopt/ develop test methods for the EU Construction Products Directive (CPD) Essential Requirement 3 on Health and Environment. He is working closely with US EPA in implementing more elaborate characterization leaching tests, similar to the ones developed in CEN and ISO, in regulatory practice to facilitate better decision making. He has been involved in the development of national regulations (Building Materials Decree, 1995) and in the EU Landfill Directive.
