II International Conference on Waste Management in Latin America - GRAL 2011
Santiago de Cali, Colombia. 15 to 17 June 2011
Organized by: RED GRAL, IWWG - International Waste Working Group
With the scientific support of:
Universidad del Valle
Universidad Autónoma de Occidente
PRESENTATION
According to the Pan American Health Organization, most of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean open dumping or sanitary landfilling are the most common disposal systems for municipal solid waste. Other treatment options are emerging and are of limited use, and in general take the form of specific initiatives and sometimes experiments. At the First International Conference on Solid Waste Management in Latin America-GRAL, held in 2009 in Quito, representatives of several countries, indicated that, in the Region, several efforts have been undertaken to resolve the health and environmental problems associated with the management of solid wastes and that each day there is more interest in developing conceptual and technological elements around: the reduction in the rates of generation, treatment and subsequent use of recyclable materials and proper disposal of the rest of the waste. ..
For this purpose, during the meeting in Quito the need for the establishment of formal meeting spaces it was stressed. These meetings would allow feedback between the different institutions involved in the Solid Waste Management in the Region and the development of collective strategies to strengthen it. To fulfill this purpose, we formed the Latin American Network of Professionals in Solid Waste and we established a biennial Conference in a different country, appointing Santiago de Cali in Colombia, as the seat for GRAL 2011.
GRAL 2011 will be an event in which Latin American solid waste managers have space to share information and discuss trends in solid waste management in the region, assess options to increase the number of recovered materials and their exploitation, discover alternatives and also improve key aspects of final disposal of solid waste such as design and operation of landfills, addressing topics such as handling of gases and leachate. The event in Cali is sponsored by organizations such as the International Waste Working Group (IWWG), the Network GRAL and academia through the Universidad del Valle and Universidad Autonoma del Occidente in Cali.
